2026 Jeep Cherokee Gear Selector: A Small Dial With a Big Purpose

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee returns with a completely redesigned interior, new hybrid technology and plenty of features aimed at making everyday driving easier. One of the smallest changes may also be one of the most noticeable once you sit behind the wheel: the new rotary electronic gear selector.

How Does the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Gear Selector Work?

Instead of the traditional gear lever found in previous Cherokee models, the 2026 Cherokee uses a compact rotary dial on the centre console. Drivers simply press the brake pedal and rotate the selector into Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive or Sport. The selected position is electronically communicated to the Cherokee’s hybrid transmission.

The system also incorporates safeguards. For example, if a driver requests a gear that cannot safely be engaged, the transmission can prevent the shift and alert the driver through the gear-position indicator.

But why use a dial at all? Space. Jeep specifically designed the new rotary selector to free up valuable room around the centre console. Removing a tall conventional shifter creates a cleaner area for cupholders, phones and other everyday items. Jeep says the redesigned Cherokee also provides 30% more cargo capacity behind the second row compared with the previous Cherokee.

Don’t Confuse the Gear Selector With Selec-Terrain

Beside the everyday transmission controls, the Cherokee’s Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System helps the vehicle adapt to changing conditions. The 2026 Cherokee receives standard Jeep 4×4 capability, something Saskatchewan drivers may especially appreciate when pavement turns snowy or roads become muddy.

What Else Is New About the 2026 Cherokee?

The biggest change is underneath the hood. Canadian models use a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain paired with an electronic variable transmission (EVT). The hybrid system does not need to be plugged in and can deliver up to approximately 800 kilometres of combined driving range.

Inside, drivers also get a 12.3-inch Uconnect® 5 touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital cluster display, while available technology includes wireless charging, a 360-degree Surround View Camera and Digital Rearview Mirror.

For Saskatoon drivers, the redesigned Cherokee combines traditional Jeep capability with a much more modern approach to efficiency and interior usability. The rotary gear selector might seem like a simple detail, but it represents what the 2026 Jeep Cherokee is all about: making smarter use of space while bringing new technology into an SUV built for Canadian driving.
